Is there a good solution for synching/backing up data on a Mac (OS 10.1 - 10.4)?
RsyncX is a good tool that allows you to sync to your Novell user folder or external hard drive.
It's a free download: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16814
For instructions on accessing Novell from a Mac, see: http://it.pratt.duke.edu/accessing_novell_from_a_mac
Not sure if you have a Novell account? Contact Jim Daigle, Novell Administrator, Pratt IT (jim.daigle@duke.edu).
To use RsyncX:
Leave all of the "Simple RsyncX" GUI buttons to their default with the exception of "Source" and "Destination" (these are the "back up" and "back up to" folders). For the field that says "Source," which is the folder you wish to back up, either browse for or drag the folder to "Source" (eg: the "~Documents" and "~Library" folders on your computer are the two most important folders to back up (assuming you don't have everything on your desktop)). Follow a similar procedure for "Desitination;" browse for or drag the folder you want to back up to to "Destination" (this is typically a folder on your external drive or your user folder on Novell). Hit "Synchronize" and you're done. The first time you do this it will take much longer than subsequent syncs. This is because the first time you do this, it copies the entire folder - all of its contents. Subsequent synchronizations will only copy new files to your destination folder. When finished, you will most likely get a message that states you should verify. This is normal - you need not verify.
Please DO NOT back up personal data to Novell (including photos, music, videos, etc.).
